FAQ's

We understand that most people have not worked with pawn shops before - it can be scary! Here are some of our most FAQ's, and we have a longer list here. Do not hesitate to reach out to us with any other questions, we are happy to help! We want you to be comfortable and confident in your decision to work with us - whether it's a loan, selling an item, or purchasing!

Loans

Overall process

  1. To get started, you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid state or federal photo ID.

  2. Bring in an Item of Value - Whether it’s jewelry, electronics, tools, designer items, or something else—we accept a wide range of items as collateral.

  3. We Evaluate Your Item - Our team carefully inspects the condition, brand, age, any signs of wear or damage (like mold), and current market value to determine a fair loan offer.

  4. Agree on a Loan Amount - Once we agree on the value, we’ll draw up a simple pawn contract, give you a copy of your pawn ticket, and pay you cash on the spot.

  5. Your item is then safely stored until you’re ready to repay the loan and pick it up. It’s that simple—no credit checks, no long waits.

What happens if I don't pay back my loan?

We understand that life happens, and while most people plan to return for their items, sometimes that’s not possible—and that’s okay.

If a loan isn’t repaid by the due date and no extension or renewal is arranged, the item used as collateral becomes the property of A-1 Hawk. According to Oregon law, this takes effect on the 31st day after the loan’s due date.

That said, we’re here to help. If you’re struggling to make your payment or need a little more time, don’t hesitate to reach out. Our team is committed to working with you—whether it’s setting up a renewal or finding another solution. We want to give you every opportunity to reclaim your items.

How long is the loan and what are my fees?

In Oregon, pawn loans are issued for 60 days, with an additional 30-day grace period. That gives you up to 90 days to repay your loan and reclaim your item before it becomes property of the shop.

We understand that sometimes you need a little more time. That’s why we allow customers to renew their loan—essentially starting a new 90-day cycle—by paying the interest and fees due. You can continue to renew your loan for as long as needed, as long as payments are current.

Our Rates (as set by Oregon law):

Interest: 3% per month

(Minimum $3.00 or one month’s interest, whichever is greater)

Set-Up Fee: 10% of the loan amount

(Minimum $2.00, Maximum $250.00)

Storage Fee: 7% of the loan amount

(Minimum $2.00, Maximum $250.00)

You only pay these fees if you choose to renew or redeem your loan. If you choose to forfeit the item, no further payment is required.

Example loan fee

A $100 loan kept for 90 days would cost a total of $25.88 in interest and fees.

That’s a small amount compared to many other options: Payday loan: $39.00

Credit card late fee: $81.00 (average)

Bank overdraft: $90.00 (average)

Firearms

How can I buy a firearm?

We list a firearm. If you see something you like or have to have, you can make an offer (negotiate your heart out) or buy it on the spot (at a fixed price) or make a bid (going once, going twice, sold).

You may choose to do in-store pickup or shipment to a FFL (Federal Firearm Licensed) dealer. The FFL dealer must be located in your hometown.

Before shipment, we must receive a copy of the FFL certificate from the firearm dealer whom will receive the firearm on behalf of you.

Payment for the firearm must be made directly to us.

How do I receive my firearm after purchasing it?

It depends on whether you select Ship to Dealer or Immediate In-store Pickup.

If the item is not local and you select Ship to Dealer, our merchants wrap, pack, and ship your item to your favorite local FFL (Federal Firearms Licensed Dealer).

If the item is local and you select Immediate Pickup, you can immediately pick up your item at the store using In Store Pickup (plus, you save money by avoiding shipping charges!).

Online Shopping

Is A1 Hawk a safe place to shop?

Yes! Every item that each we take in is vetted by the local law enforcement agencies, and some jurisdictions submit their item data to a national database to match any item that may have been reported by the Police.

What is an auction?

Everybody wants to win, but only if the price is right. We determine when the auction ends and if/how much the reserve price will be. Buyers are then able to bid against one another, with each subsequent bid higher than the previous. Going once, going twice—at the end of the allotted time period, the item is sold to the highest bidder.

Can I do an exchange?

Yes, you may exchange your item if you physically come to our store and exchange your item for another item in that store.

How often are new items posted?

Each and every day, all day and all night, new merchandise is added. So if you can’t find what you’re looking for today, check back tomorrow!
